Christmas in July (Santa brought me retro games!)

Recently I stumbled across a Craigslist ad posted by someone giving away a bunch of old computer games. (Okay, I “stumbled across” it by typing “King’s Quest” into Craigslist’s search bar. I do this with alarming frequency. But I usually don’t find anything!) I picked them up today. Sadly no boxes, but I still scored some Sierra manuals I didn’t have yet, plus a bunch of other games from the same era.

First up: Disks and manuals for King’s Quest I, IV, and V, plus the first edition of the King’s Quest companion.

I have a boxed KQI but it was missing the manual, so now that’s complete. (Karma!) The disks say MS-SCI on them so I’m guessing they’re for the game’s 1990 remake…? I don’t have a 5.25″ floppy drive (yet) to check it out.

On a whim, I installed KQIV and was thrilled to discover that it’s the rare AGI version! This was the last game Sierra made with their AGI engine, and they simultaneously developed it with the new SCI engine. Legend has it that both versions were released, since Sierra wasn’t sure how well the SCI version would work on customers’ computers, but when it became clear that people were able to play the SCI version without issues they pulled the AGI version off the shelves. The Apple IIGS version that I played as a kid was based on the AGI version, so to me this one is more familiar. (There’s a screenshot comparison in my King’s Quest IV review here, if you’re curious.)

KQV and its manual, I already have, but I’ll hold onto the duplicates. I’m at the point in my life where I can’t bear to throw anything Sierra-related away… this stuff is just going to get harder and harder to find.

Furniture and built-ins for the Rosedale

This weekend I assembled some furniture kits for the Rosedale. I’ve also been plugging away at the interior trim, but I’ll wait until it’s done to post pictures… it’s not very interesting progress.

I started with the Mission style bed from Daisy House. (I happen to have this kit in 1:12 as well, but haven’t assembled it yet.) The bed went together very smoothly. I’ve built a few Daisy House kits and each time have been impressed by their detailed instructions.

Next up was the Cassidy Creations nightstand. Unfortunately the instructions on these were pretty bad. (The same was true when I put together a bed and dresser for the puzzle house last summer.) It doesn’t include any sort of parts list so you have to read the instructions a few times just to figure out what each piece is supposed to be. And the instructions never say which edge you’re supposed to glue when you glue two pieces together, which of course can cause problems if you do it wrong. In particular I had a hard time figuring out how to attach the bottom of the table to the sides (which were already attached to the legs). I took a few pictures once I figured it out in case anyone else has this problem and needs a reference!

Here they are with a coat of black paint. I wish I’d painted the headboard and footboard before gluing the assembly together. With the headboard in particular, it was tough to get the paintbrush in to get the nooks and crannies between the panels. I need to do a second coat, finish the nightstand drawer, and make bedding. The bed kit doesn’t come with a mattress but that should be easy enough to make out of foam core or balsa.

Here’s how they’ll look in the master bedroom. The chair is from Lee’s Line and I made the lamp out of a golf tee and the top of a hotel-sized lotion bottle.

Adventure games on the iPhone (they do exist!)

About a year ago I jumped on the iOS bandwagon with an iPod Touch. I was immediately struck by how difficult the App Store is to navigate. You really have to know what you’re looking for—or to put your blind faith in the best-selling rankings that display more popular games higher up on the list. The App Store does have an Adventure category, but so many games are miscategorized, it’s not very helpful. So I started writing a series of Eye on iPhone articles for Adventure Gamers to help people find these hidden gems (and, on occasion, buried turds).


I see Waldo! But do you see any adventure games?

The fourth Eye on iPhone article went up today. (And since I neglected to post a blog about the one before this when it went up in May, here you go.) One of the games I looked at this time was The 7th Guest, which was a favorite of mine as a kid and incredibly fun to replay on my iPod Touch. (If you’d told me in 1994 that I would someday be playing that game on a handheld device the size of a playing card, and then publishing an article about it on a futuristic publishing platform named the in-ter-net, I might have experienced an existential dilemma.)

In the past year I’ve checked out a good two dozen (real!) adventure games on my iPod Touch; of these, only a few have even graced the best-selling list. Adventure games are in a better place than they were a decade ago (thanks, Old Man Murray), but it’s still a less popular genre than, say, action games. Visibility and sales go hand in hand on the App Store—when people see a game on the list and buy it, this bumps the game higher up on the list, causing more people to see it and buy it. This means the smaller relative size of the adventure genre could work to shoppers’ and developers’ advantage, if the section were actually restricted to adventure games.

But with all sorts of random games categorized as adventures, it’s practically impossible for the quality adventure games that are coming to the App Store to get recognition. Obviously a game needs to sell well to rank on the best-selling list, but why should the sales of adventure games like The Secret of Monkey Island and Puzzle Agent and Broken Sword and Scarlett and the Spark of Life have to compete against the sales of an arcade game like Doodle Jump or an action game like Infinity Blade or a sim like, um, The Sims to rank in the adventure section? It doesn’t make sense.

On a sort-of-but-not-quite-related note, I recently got a PlayStation 3. It’s my first time owning a console (not counting the Nintendo DS) and it’s opened up a whole new world. And, yes, there are adventure games available for it, too! I’ll post about that at some point. Right now I’m too caught up in L.A. Noire…
