Edna & Harvey: The Breakout review

Adventure Gamers has posted my review of Edna & Harvey: The Breakout, an quirky little game from German developer Daedalic. Actually, there’s nothing “little” about it… this is a long game with a ton of gratuitous interactivity crammed into it. But it’s a cartoon with a wacky art style, and you play a mental patient who (along with her talking stuffed bunny) are trying to break out of an asylum, so it’s tempting to characterize Edna & Harvey as a “light” game. I was pleasantly surprised to discover an emotionally charged story buried underneath all the layers of silliness.

If you find the review convincing, you can buy the game at Amazon. And probably other places.

Quest for Glory behind the scenes article is now online

GamesTM has just posted my Quest for Glory behind the scenes article on their website. This article ran in the magazine about a year ago. It was super fun to write (mainly because Lori Cole gave a kick-ass interview) and I’m excited that even more people will get a chance to read it now!

The article chronicles the rise and fall of Sierra’s Quest for Glory series between its debut in the late 80s and its conclusion a decade later. I said a bit more about it here. (But it’s silly to read that old blog post when you could read the article instead…)

Speaking of GamesTM and Sierra retrospectives, I have a similar article in the current issue, this time about Gabriel Knight. I haven’t seen it yet but my copy is in the mail, so as soon as it gets here I’ll post some more info. The issue number is 106 and it’s on sale in the UK now.

Hands-on preview of Telltale’s Jurassic Park

Man vs. beast. Who do you think will win?

Last week I had the chance to play part of Telltale’s upcoming Jurassic Park game. Check out my hands-on impressions at Adventure Gamers.

I’m really not a Jurassic Park fan—I only saw the first movie, once, back when it was in theaters—but I’m loving the departure from Telltale’s previous games, from a cinematic standpoint. They’ve been comparing it to Heavy Rain (which I tragically haven’t played, due to a lack of a PlayStation 3) and from what I’ve seen so far, I think it’s a great way to tell this type of story. It’s enough like an adventure game while still as action-packed as you’d expect a Jurassic Park movie to be. As for the Quick Time Events, I don’t mind them, but that’s not really what makes it fun for me (and I expect they aren’t the aspect of Heavy Rain that I’d most enjoy, either).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go refill my coffee cup by frequently tapping the X button until the liquid reaches the brim…
