Orchid – September update

The semi-finished house, in its new home on a shelf in my kitchen:

Now that I brought the house home, I’m having a lot of fun with the decorating… The first thing I did was finish the bed. I made the mattress, bedspread, and pilows. The pillow with the pattern was a Janet Granger kit.

And here is the bathroom. I put a piece of plywood behind the tub so it’s not up against the slanted ceiling. May also build a little windowsill / shelf so there’s somewhere to put the shampoo bottles. This is the green flooring I bought awhile ago. Having trouble finding something that matches for the walls around the shower (I don’t want hexagons on the wall…) I did find some nice peach and white tiles at a dollhouse store in New Jersey when I was there for my friend’s wedding… might wind up using that instead of the green. I will be adding the shower curtain and fixtures once I tile the walls around the tub.

Orchid – August update

Geoff was over with his digital camera so I had him take a few pictures of the conservatory. The cabinets and appliances are mostly assembled.

An eating surface will be built into the island, where the chairs are.

Update, August 25: Finally, the dormer has been attached! With a ton of glue and a bit of luck, it’ll stay put. I turned the house on its side and applied pressure to get the dormer to glue in as well as possible. There are major cracks and glue glops, but I’ll be covering them up with trim.

Orchid – July update

My orders from Dollshouse.com and HBS arrived. I ordered some furniture, as well as the lights. So, the time had come to tackle the electricity. I’m glad Geoff was there… he knew exactly what he was doing!

Looks simple, huh? Near the stair hole, it’s attached to the piece of tapewire that’s running under the wallpaper.

It’s definitely not the most stable system. We stuck down the tapewire that was running up the wall, and overlapped it with the piece running across the floor. I’m using an AC converter so the pink and blue wires don’t need to line up. We used metal brads to connect the two pieces of tapewire. Geoff did all the work to connect the transformer to the wire at the bottom of the house (under the first floor). Then we cut the outlets off the lights, spliced and stripped the ends of the wires, and wrapped the wires around brads. These got pushed into the tapewire to make a connection. Geoff did the first light, and I did the rest.

Let there be light! Geoff drilled a tiny hole in the ceiling behind this lamp. The wire runs through that hole and to the tapewire on the second floor. Note the shadow of the window on the opposite wall… just like a real house!
