The incredible edible egg

My neighbors are on vacation, and they asked me to take care of their chickens while they’re away.

In my youth I spent summers working at the Natick Community Organic Farm, so this isn’t my first experience herding chickens into a coop or collecting eggs. (Little known fact: if you need to pick up a chicken that’s on the move, the easiest way is to grab it by the foot. Geoff didn’t believe me on this until we saw Mike Rowe do it the other night on Dirty Jobs.) What I didn’t necessarily expect is how overwhelming the volume of eggs would be. The six chickens are averaging 4-5 each day, which are quickly adding up!

In a Little House on the Prairie kind of way, it’s fun to open the door to the chicken coop and discover warm eggs waiting to be picked up. And they do taste better than eggs from the store. So at first it was like, This is cool, what should we do with all these eggs? Ten days later, it’s more like, Crap, what are we going to do with all these eggs!!! I have two full cartons in the fridge right now, and another week of chicken duty to go.

We’ve tried a few breakfast experiments that were more or less successful. I’ve made myself a dish I’ve always known as “egg in toast,” which my mother used to make for me—cut a circle out of the bread and fry an egg inside the hole. (According to Wikipedia, this unassuming recipe is known by almost two dozen different names, most of which are a lot more creative than “egg in toast.” I feel so naive.)

Yesterday we made a Tex Mex dish called migas—scrambled eggs with fried tortilla strips mixed in. We added some canned tomoatoes, chiles, and beans. I’m usually not a scrambled egg fan—and I realize it looks kind of gross in the picture below—but it was really good.

But one can only eat eggs for breakfast so many days in a row before the arteries begin to ache. Normally I’d whip up a big batch of egg salad or deviled eggs, but these fresh eggs aren’t so good for boiling—apparently they need to sit around for a month or so before the shells are tough enough to peel off a hard-boiled egg. We also made chocolate chip cookies that turned out terrible. (Note to self: don’t follow the recipe on the back of a Safeway chocolate chip bag ever again, it’ll only break your heart.) And I’m left with two dozen eggs that need using up, with more on the way, and no idea what to do with them. Quiche? Some kind of decadent dessert? Throw them at the dogs that bark at us when we’re walking around the neighborhood?

Half scale window box project in American Miniaturist issue 88

My copy just arrived, so start checking your local mini store for this issue! I wrote a tutorial for the half scale window boxes my mom and I dreamed up for the Fairfield. The window boxes are made from skinny sticks, clay, and sprigs of fake flowers that you can get for cheap at stores like Michaels or the Dollar Tree. All in all it’s a quick and cost-effective project—with an end result that looks like it should have cost a lot more!

So far I’ve only quickly flipped through the issue, but I spotted a few other garden-related goodies, plus a how-to for modern IKEA-like shelving units that I’m going to have to try.

Puzzle house garden completed

I actually finished this up over Fourth of July weekend, but forgot to post the pictures. Oops.

I really liked the trim my dad added to the base of the Fairfield and I wanted to do the same for the puzzle house. Geoff helped with the cutting and mitering. The base is a bit thicker than the Fairfield’s, so we had to buy larger trim and cut it down using the radial arm saw. (He fed the trim into the saw; I held it steady as it came out the other end.) As a result the top edge of the trim is flat, not curved, but it looks fine. I stained the trim with Minwax Early American to match the house’s interior trim.

Once the base was ready, I put the house on it and carefully measured to make sure it was centered left to right. Then I glued down the front step and the flagstone path. These served as “anchors” to make sure the rest of the landscaping was centered properly.

My plants are made from pieces of plastic flowers stuck into clay bases. I glued each plant to the base, then covered the clay and the areas in between the plants with coffee grounds to look like soil. The technique is described in more detail here. For this house, since the garden areas are fairly cramped, I put the fence pieces and house in place to figure out where the plants and rock borders should go, then removed them to make it easier to glue in the coffee soil.

And… drum roll please…

I realized after taking these photos that I forgot to add trim under the eaves to cover the gaps where the roof meets the walls. It’s coming! I’ll also do something with the trellis at some point (right now it’s temporarily held on with putty).
